In 2019, Dr. Jeff Biernaskie, PhD, was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, in recognition of his leadership in the field of tissue regeneration and stem cell biology.

Biernaskie has made seminal discoveries in this area, including how reactive immune cells contribute to tissue regeneration, and how dermal stem cells are activated following an injury, and initiate the formation of healthy cells within a wound. His multidisciplinary research program, which includes work with biomedical engineers, biologists, and clinicians, has allowed him to develop creative approaches to solve complex health problems.

Biernaskie is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative Biology and Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society Chair in Skin Regeneration and Wound Healing. He has a joint appointment in the Cumming School of Medicine, and is a member of the Alberta Children鈥檚 Hospital Research Institute and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
